sydney autumn racing carnivalThe 2019 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival features the exciting Golden Slipper carnival at Rosehill racecourse in March and The Championships at Randwick racecourse in April.

The Championships are a joint initiative between Racing NSW and the Australian Turf Club and take place over two consecutive Saturdays, featuring a number of Group 1 races over the two days.

Day one of The Championships features the $3,000,000 Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Saturday 6th April 2019, while the $4,000,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), now the richest race of the Sydney autumn carnival, features on the second day on Saturday 13th April 2019.

The first group races of the Sydney autumn take place in early February at Rosehill featuring the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at weight-for-age.

Group one racing kicks off in late February with the running of the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick racecourse.

Before ‘The Championships‘ take centre stage at at Randwick, three feature race days are held at Rosehill racecourse in March. The $3,500,000 Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) for two year olds is the jewel in the crown of the Rosehill autumn carnival.

Other feature races include the Coolmore Stud Classic (1500m), The BMW (2400m) and George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

Major autumn race days at Rosehill are held over three consecutive Saturdays in March, while Randwick hosts four major race days where group one racing is on the agenda.

About Sydney Racing

The Australian Turf Club (ATC) conducts metropolitan racing in Sydney, New South Wales, and race at four city tracks, Randwick, Rosehill, Canterbury and Warwick Farm. Formed in February 2011, the ATC came about following a merger between the Australian Turf Club and Sydney Turf Club.

Sydney’s major racing carnival takes place in autumn each year during February, March and April. Feature races include the Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill and the Doncaster Mile and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick. Warwick Farm hosts the Chipping Norton Stakes meeting in February.

Spring racing in Sydney is highlighted by the Golden Rose at Rosehill in September and the Epsom Handicap at Randwick in October.

Canterbury does not hold major feature races and is the only city track to hold night meetings in Sydney.

Where is Randwick Racecourse?

Randwick, or Royal Randwick as it often referred to, is located in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs and is the headquarters of Sydney racing. Randwick Racecourse is situated around six kilometres from the Sydney CBD in the suburb of Randwick.

Getting to Randwick is quite easy by public transport with a bus terminal and slipway located right outside the main racecourse entrance on Alison Road. For those travelling by car, infield parking is available on a first come first served basis.

Where is Rosehill Racecourse?

Rosehill Racecourse is located in Sydney’s west, around 22 kilometres from the city centre in the suburb of Rosehill.

Getting to the Rosehill track is easy enough with Parramatta Road, Victoria Road, and the M4 Motorway all roadways to Rosehill.

Race day trains run directly to the racecourse. The Rosehill train station is located on the T6 Carlingford line. You can also travel by Ferry from Circular Quay to Parramatta and connect with a free bus service.

Where is Warwick Farm Racecourse?

Warwick Farm Racecourse is situated on the banks of the Georges River, around 30 kilometres south west of the Sydney CBD. It’s bordered by Governor Macquarie Drive and the Hume Highway and is just a couple of kilometres from the Liverpool City Centre and M5 access to the Hume Highway.

Public transport is readily available, and the track is a quick walk from the Warwick Farm railway station. Free buses are available on race days providing return trips between the racecourse and the station.

Where is Canterbury Racecourse?

Canterbury Park is in the suburb of Canterbury in Sydney and is located around 12 kilometres from the city centre. Canterbury has an excellent racing surface and is home to night racing in Sydney.

The track is close to Canterbury railway station for easy public transport by train. Take the T3 Bankstown Line to Canterbury Station and then it’s just a 10 minute walk to the course. Buses also travel to Canterbury from the CBD and drop you off right at the front gates. Free public parking is available inside the track and can be accessed via Frederick Street.

The Sydney autumn racing carnival is the highlight of the racing year in Sydney, while the Sydney Spring Carnival features a number of quality group one races.
