Melbourne Autumn Carnival

melbourne autumn racing carnivalThe 2019 Melbourne autumn racing carnival features six group one race meetings of exciting thoroughbred racing action, highlighted by ‘Super Saturday of Racing’ at Flemington in March.

New Year’s Day hosts the first group race of the year with the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) held down the famous ‘straight six’ course at Flemington racecourse in January. Just over three weeks later the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) takes place at Moonee Valley racecourse.

The first group one race of the Melbourne autumn is the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), held at Caulfield racecourse in early February, quickly followed by the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) the following Saturday at Flemington.

Two weeks after the Orr Stakes meeting it’s Blue Diamond Stakes Day at Caulfield, where the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) hosts their major race day of the autumn. In recent years the Blue Diamond Stakes meeting has grown to become one of the biggest race days of the year.

Featuring the $1,000,000 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) for two-year-olds and accompanied by quality group races such as the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m), makes for a fantastic day of feature racing.

In early March the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) hosts their big two-day carnival at Flemington, home to ‘Super Saturday of Racing’ on the second day. The Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) features on the first day, while the $1,000,000 Group 1 Newmarket Handicap for sprinters and $1,500,000 Group 1 Australian Cup for middle distance gallopers are the star attractions on day two. Super Saturday is an outstanding race day and attracts the country’s best horses to the home of the Melbourne Cup.

The Moonee Valley Racing Club (MRC) hosts two feature Friday night meetings in late March at Moonee Valley racecourse with the $220,000 Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes and $500,000 Group 1 William Reid Stakes highlighting each respective meeting.

About Melbourne Racing

Metropolitan racing in Melbourne is conducted at Flemington, Caulfield, Moonee Valley, and Sandown racecourses.

Feature racing carnivals are held in spring and autumn with the Melbourne spring racing carnival the major event of the Australian racing season.

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) hosts racing at Flemington where the Melbourne Cup is the highlight of the year in November. Other major races at Flemington include the Victoria Derby and Crown Oaks in Spring, and the Australian Cup and Newmarket handicap in the autumn.

The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) administers racing at Caulfield and Sandown.

Caulfield holds major racing carnivals in March and October, while Sandown has its major race day one week after the Melbourne Cup Carnival in November.

The Caulfield Cup and Caulfield Guineas are major spring races at Caulfield while the C.F. Orr Stakes and Blue Diamond Stakes headline the autumn.

Sandown is home to the Sandown Classic meeting in November featuring multiple group races.

The Moonee Valley Racing Club (MVRC) conducts racing at Moonee Valley  and is the only city track that holds night meetings during the Melbourne racing season. Feature races include the Cox Plate and Manikato Stakes in spring and the William Reid Stakes in autumn.
