2017 Australian Cup preview and odds

March 9, 2017

flemington racesThe 2017 Australian Cup headlines Super Saturday of Racing at Flemington this Saturday with punters keen on Humidor and Jameka at online bookmaker Sportsbet.

Darren Weir trained four-year-old Humidor is $4.20 equal favourite for the Australian Cup, alongside outstanding Ciaron Maher mare Jameka.

Humidor put the writing on the wall for an Australian Cup assault when runner-up to stablemate Stratum Star in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield last time out.

The son of Teofilo hit the line strongly and will be cherry ripe for Saturday following three good runs this campaign.

Stablemate and Peter Young Stakes winner Stratum Star is well in the betting at 6.00, while Weir’s other runner Real Love is $21.

Jameka has firmed from $4.60 into $4.20 and has solid form around at the home of the Melbourne Cup.

She won the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) here as a three-year-old and beat all but Hartnell in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) over this course & distance in the spring.

Hugh Bowman, rider of last year’s Australian Cup winner Preferment, takes the mount on Jameka.

Robert Hickmott’s The United States has firmed from $7.50 into $7.00 for the Australian Cup, and while he’s had two wins and two seconds over this trip, he’s yet to win in five starts at Flemington.

Lee & Anthony Freedman stayer Exospheric is an interesting runner, although he has eased from $8.00 to $8.50 at Sportsbet.

The former import was a solid third behind Jameka in last year’s Caulfield Cup (2400m) and resumed with a more than handy sixth in the Peter Young Stakes.

Tom Melbourne, the Freedman’s second runner, is $17.00.

Godlphin’s Tally, from the John O’Shea stable, is $19.00 into $17.00, no doubt due to the services of the money man, Joao Moreira.

The in form David & Ben Hayes & Tom Dabernig stable will be represented by Boom Time, who is out to $34.00, from $31.00.

This year’s Australian Cup (2000m) is set to run on Saturday 11th March 2017 at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne.

The $1,500,000 Group 1 race is the feature event of the day, alongside the $1,000,000 Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) for sprinters.
