2016 Flying Amy Classic preview and odds – Thirty Talks favourite

June 7, 2016

dogs-thirty-talksA quality field of young greyhounds will contest the 2016 Flying Amy Classic (520m) at Albion Park on Thursday night.

Online bookmaker Sportsbet has installed Thirty Talks the $2.50 favourite from Fabulous Bill $3.60 and Split Image $4.50.

The Sportsbet greyhound analyst has gone through each of the four Flying Amy Classic heats last week and shares his thoughts with Sports and Racing.com.au.

Flying Amy Classic Heat 1
As has been the way for much of his 15 start career, Thirty Talks was sent out as a short priced favourite. The heavy support from the punters saw the talented youngest backed from $1.55 into $1.45 at the jump. After jumping second and holding the rail early, the Tony Brett trained chaser set what would ultimately be the time standard for the night in 29.66. Of the reminder of the field, it was Lucky Sally who, after being in fifth early, managed a very strong run home to finish second and qualify at big odds

Flying Amy Classic Heat 2
Fabulous Bill made it consecutive favourites after jumping straight to the front from the blue rug to lead well early. Although he stopped the clock at an impressive 29.96, the fact the final margin was over ten lengths was largely due to the remainder of the field bunching up and checking each other around the first turn. Gelantipy Gold managed to avoid most of the trouble to run second in 30.75.

Flying Amy Classic Heat 3
The money was again correct, this time with Issy Cool justifying the label of “favourite”. After jumping slowly from box 7, the Tony Apap trained chaser took the rails for the majority of the run, peeling off only to reel in the then leaders, to win in a steady 30.31. Boom Warrior also ran on well after finding itself last entering the back straight, to qualify for the final in 30.66.

Flying Amy Classic Heat 4
The longest priced winner of the heats came in the final heat, with Split Image saluting at $4 on the fixed odds. This was the second dog to qualify for leading trainer Tony Brett. After it recorded the quickest first sectional of any runner in the heats it was never being challenged, winning in 29.97. In second place was the tiny Wings Of Perlita, weighing only 25kg, who, after trying hard to rail early, stopped the clock in a solid 30.35.

2016 Flying Amy Classic preview

With the box draw now completed it looks a familiar picture with Thirty Talks the favourite, opening $2.70. A win would take the career prize money of the son of Where’s Pedro (x Unfinished) to over $150,000, despite not yet being two years old. Although it has drawn awkwardly in the 6, the real early speed is drawn out wide with Split Image $5.00 in box 8.

On the second line of betting is the second quickest qualifier, Fabulous Bill at $3.30, who is going for his fourth straight win and fifth out of his last six starts. He will however need some luck if he is to win, but should Thirty Talks fail to fire early and miss the kick, he is well drawn to take advantage.

With the rails draw and the strongest run home, Lucky Sally $7.00 looks likely to be running on for a minor placing at reasonable odds.
