autumn racing carnivalThe 2017 Melbourne autumn racing carnival features six Group 1 race meetings of exciting thoroughbred racing action, highlighted by ‘Super Saturday of Racing’ at Flemington in March.

The $150,000 Group 3 Standish Handicap is the first group race of the new year and takes place at Flemington Racecourse on New Year’s Day. The $200,000 Group 2 Australia Stakes follows just over three weeks later at Moonee Valley racecourse.

The first group one race of the autumn, the $400,000 CF Orr Stakes, is held the following month at Caulfield, headlining a big day of racing for the Melbourne Racing Club. The $500,000 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning meeting takes place the next week at Flemington.

The Melbourne Racing Club’s major race day of the autumn takes centre stage late February with seven group races on Blue Diamond Stakes Day at Caulfield, headlined by the $1,000,000 Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes for two-year-olds.

The $500,000 Group 1 Futurity Stakes and $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate are also held on Blue Diamond Stakes Day, which now rivals Super Saturday of Racing at Flemington as one of the most prestigious race days of the Melbourne autumn.

The two-day Flemington autumn carnival kicks off in early March with the $500,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas meeting. The following week is ‘Super Saturday of Racing’ with one of the biggest race days of the year. The $1,000,000 Group 1 Newmarket Handicap for sprinters and $1,000,000 Group 1 Australian Cup for stayers are the feature events.

Moonee Valley hosts two feature Friday night meetings in late March with the $220,000 Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes and $500,000 Group 1 William Reid Stakes highlighting each respective meeting.

Feature racing carnivals are held in spring and autumn with the Melbourne spring racing carnival the major event of the Australian racing season.

The Moonee Valley Racing Club (MVRC) conduct racing at Moonee Valley  and is the only city track that holds night meetings during the Melbourne racing season. Feature races include the Cox Plate and Manikato Stakes in spring and the William Reid Stakes in autumn.

Where is Flemington Racecourse?

Flemington Racecourse is located on Epsom Road in the suburb of Flemington in Melbourne, Victoria, by the Maribyrnong River.

Public transport is an easy option with trains running directly to Flemington Racecourse on race days. They depart from either Flinders Street Station or Southern Cross Station, stopping at North Melbourne Station, then straight through to Flemington Racecourse.

Where is Caulfield Racecourse?

Caulfield Racecourse is located in the suburb of Caulfield East in Melbourne, Victoria, and is easy to get to by car or public transport.

A train is the best public transportation as the train station stops across the road from the course. Parking is available in the middle of the course and across from the front entrance. Parking is free for patrons.

Where is Moonee Valley Racecourse?

Moonee Valley Racecourse can be found in the suburb of Moonee Ponds in Melbourne, Victoria.

A tram or train can be taken to the track, but there is a bit of a walk to the course from the tram stop and train station. Free public parking is available in the middle of the track.

Where is Sandown Racecourse?

Sandown Racecourse is situated on the Princes Highway in Springvale, Victoria, around 20 kilometres South East of the Melbourne city centre. The Monash Freeway provides the best travel option by car and takes around 30 minutes.
