Brisbane Winter Carnival

The 2010 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival takes place in May and June in Brisbane, Queensland, with the $1,000,000 Stradbroke Handicap the showpiece race of the winter in early June at Eagle Farm.

The Brisbane Racing Club look after racing in Brisbane and they operate out of Doomben and Eagle Farm race tracks, which are located across the road from each other.

The Brisbane winter carnival has some fantastic racing and the $150,000 Group 2 Sir Byrne Hart Stakes (1200m) kicks off the carnival on May 1st at Eagle Farm racecourse and sets the scene for some great racing to come.

Doomben host three Group 1 races in May, which are the $400,000 BTC Cup (1200), $500,000 Doomben Cup (2020m) and the main race of the autumn at Doomben, the $650,000 Doomben 10,000.

Eagle Farm has five Group 1 events in June, with the $1,000,000 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) the being major highlight of the Brisbane autumn and always a wonderful event for sprinters. The $500,000 The TJ Smith (1200m), $500,000 Queensland Derby (2400m), $500,000 Winter Stakes and $400,000 Queensland Oaks (2400m) are all quality races held at Eagle Farm in winter.

Sir Byrne Hart Stakes Day

Eagle Farm racecourse – Saturday 1st May 2010
Group racing in Brisbane begins in early May with the running of the $150,000 Group 2 Sir Byrne Hart Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm racecourse, which is the first weight-for-age race of the carnival and won in fine style by classy sprinter Swiss Ace last year.

Also on the program is the $125,000 Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) for three-year-olds run under set weight conditions and taken out in 2009 by Za Magic.

Hollindale Stakes Day

Gold Coast racecourse – Saturday 8th May 2010
Racing heads to the Gold Coast the following week when the weight-for-age $300,000 Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) is the feature event of the day and Fulmonti was an impressive winner at the picturesque Gold Coast racecourse 12 months ago.

The $125,000 Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) is another top race on the card and Chakvetadze was successful in the 3yo set weights event last year.

BTC Cup Day

Doomben racecourse – Saturday 15th May 2010
The first day of the 3 week Doomben carnival commences mid May with the first Group One race of the Brisbane winter, the $400,000 Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at weight-for-age, which is a popular event and always attracts a quality field of sprinters. Duporth scored a top victory in last year’s running of the race.

Other group races on the card include the $125,000 Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2020m) for three-year-olds at set weights taken out by Rockdale in 2009 and the $100,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2020m) which is a Quality Handicap and won last year by the handy stayer Ballack.

XXXX Doomben Cup Day

Doomben racecourse – Saturday 22nd May 2010
The middle Saturday of the Doomben racing carnival sees a top day of racing, with 7 group races on the card, including the Group 1 XXXX Doomben Cup (2020m) which is the highlight of a top day of racing. The Doomben Cup is run under weight-for-age conditions and Scenic Shot was a memorable winner of last year’s event.

Two and Three-year-olds are well catered for on Doomben Cup day with the $150,000 Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) a 2yo set weights race won by Funtantes last winter, and the $175,000 Group 3 Doomben Roses (2020m) which is a 3yo race, also run at set weights, and taken out in 2009 by Awesome Planet.

Rounding out the program are four good quality races, the $150,000 Group 3 Lady Of The Turf Stakes (1350m) for Fillies & Mares won by Ortensia last year, and the $125,000 Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) which is a Quality Handicap taken out by Court Command last May.

The $125,000 Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) is a three-year-olds race won by Court last year, while the $100,000 Group 3 Lord Mayors Cup (1615m) is a weight-for-age event taken out last winter by Rampant Lion.

Doomben $10,000 Day

Doomben racecourse – Saturday 29th May 2010
The major day of racing at Doomben during the autumn carnival hosts the $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) which is one of the most anticipated races of the Doomben winter. The Doomben 10,000 is run under weight-for-age conditions which makes it a race for the best horses, and the outstanding galloper Apache Cat won last year’s event.

Two more group races are held on Doomben 10,000 day to finish off festivities at Doomben for the autumn. The $125,000 Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2100m) is a staying event for three-year-olds which is run under set weight & penalty conditions and won by Saint Minerva last year, while the $125,000 Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m) is an Open Handicap taken out last winter by more than handy mare Reggie.

Queensland Oaks Day

Eagle Farm racecourse – Saturday 5th June 2010
Feature racing turns to Eagle Farm the following Saturday where fillies face off in the main event of the day, the $400,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m), run under level weights and the classy Purple won the classic event last winter.

More quality racing take place on Oaks day with the $250,000 Group 2 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) for two-year-olds under set weights sure to attract brilliant types, with 2010 AJC Derby winner Shoot Out scoring in last year’s running of the event.

The $250,000 Group 2 PJ O’Shea Stakes (2200m) is another popular event of the autumn and talented galloper Scenic Shot scored in the weight-for-age event last year.

The $200,000 Group 2 Dane Ripper Quality (1400m) is a nice race for Fillies & Mares and raced under Set Weight & penalties, with Chinchilla Rose the victor last year, while the $150,000 Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) is a Quality Handicap that was won by classy mare Ortensia in the winter of 2009.

Stradbroke Handicap Day

Eagle Farm – Saturday 12th June 2010
The biggest day of racing in Brisbane during the winter sees the running of the $1,000,000 Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) which is one of the toughest handicap events on the racing calendar each year and taken out in slashing style last year by the fast finishing Black Piranha.

Stradbroke Day is a fantastic day of racing, and has two more races worth half a million dollars which are the $500,000 Group 1 The TJ Smith (1600m) a 2yo set weight race won by Linky Dink last year, and the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) which is a classic 3yo event run under set weight conditions and taken out in 2009 by Court Ruler.

Finishing off a great program of racing is the $300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) which is an Open Handicap won by Scenic Shot in sterling fashion last year, while the $250,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) is a 3yo set weights race taken out last winter by Express Air.

Winter Stakes Day

Eagle Farm racecourse – Saturday 26th June 2010
The final day of the winter carnival in Brisbane will attract the countrie’s better mares who will battle it out in the $500,000 Group 1 Winter Stakes (1400m) for Fillies & Mares at weight-for-age and Russeting scored a top win in last year’s running of the race.

Two group races round out the program with the $200,000 Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) an Open Handicap won last year by Hume, and the $175,000 Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) a Quality Handicap taken out in 2009 by News Alert

The Brisbane Racing Club also runs a number of listed races from November to January each year and two Group 3 races take place in December at Doomben race track.

George Moore Stakes Day

Doomben racecourse – Saturday 4th December 2010
Early December sees the running of the $200,000 Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) which is a Quality Handicap race that has recently been run as the Summer Stakes. The classy Burdekin Blues won the race in stylish fashion last summer.

Vo Rogue Plate Day

Doomben racecourse – Sunday 26th December 2010
Boxing Day racing in December takes place at Doomben and the popular course hosts the $150,000 Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) for three-year-olds and Graceful Anna was victorious in the set weight event last December.
