Adelaide Autumn Carnival
The 2010 Adelaide Racing Carnival takes place from March through to May and is highlighted by the $400,000 Adelaide Cup for stayers, while the $300,000 Goodwood is the premier event of the autumn for sprinters, with both races held at Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide.
Racing in Adelaide is administered by the South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) and all but one of the SAJC’s yearly group races take place in the autumn, the odd one out is the $100,000 Group 3 Spring Stakes in August each year.
Group racing in Adelaide kicks on $125,000 Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes day in late February and the biggest day of the racing year is held On Labour Day in early March, which is the second Monday after the running of the Lord Reims Stakes, when the $400,000 Adelaide Cup is run in front a big crowd at Morphettville racecourse.
Adelaide offers four Group 1 races during the autumn and they are raced over two seperate days. The $300,000 Robert Sangster Stakes & $300,000 Australasian Oaks take place in late March and the $300,000 Goodwood & $300,000 SA Derby are held on the final day of the autumn carnival in early May.

Lord Reims Stakes Day
Morphettville racecourse – Saturday 27th February
Group racing for the new year begins in late February with two group races which herald the beginning of the autumn racing carnival in Adelaide.The $125,000 Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) is the main race of the day and is an open handicap event run under set weight & penalty conditons and Miss Pavlova was successful last year. The $100,000 Group 3 SA Breeders Stakes (1200m) is also on the card for 2yo gallopers at set weights and Colour took out the race last autumn.
Adelaide Cup Day
Morphettville racecourse – Monday 8th March, 2010
One of the major days of autumn racing in Adelaide takes place on the Monday Labour Day holiday with the running of the $400,000 Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) or 2 miles in the old language. An open handicap event, handy stayer Zavite took out the race in 2009 and the city of Adelaide will be abuzz for the running of the Cup.Other races on the Cup Day program include the $200,000 Group 2 Yallambee Stud Classic (1200m) for three-year-olds under set weight conditions and won last year by the talented filly Champagne Harmony, and the $100,000 Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at weight-for-age race which assembles some classy sprinters and Diplomatic Force took race honours in 2009.
Robert Sangster Stakes Day
Morphettville Racecourse – Saturday 20th March 2010
Another big day of racing in Adelaide with two quality Group 1 races on the card and they attract many of the top fillies & mares searching for Group One glory.The weight-for-age $300,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) is the premier sprint race for fillies & mares over the autumn carnival and was taken out in awesome fashion last year by classy galloper Bel Mer.
The $300,000 Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) run at set weights is a race for three-year-old fillies only and top filly Gallica won the race last year.
Also on the program is the $100,000 Group 3 The Jansz National Stakes which is a 2yo set weight & penalty event that was taken out by Majestic Music this time last year.
SA Oaks Day
Morphettville Parks racecourse – Saturday 10th April 2010
The newly formed Morphettville Parks track has two group races during the autumn racing carnival and the $100,000 Group 3 SA Oaks (2400m) for three-year-olds is now held at Adelaides second city track for 3yo fillies at set weights and taken out last year by Zapurple.The $100,000 Group 3 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) is also on the same day for two-year-olds and was taken out in 2009 by Silent Surround.
Queen Of The South Stakes Day
Morphettville racecourse – Saturday 17th April 2010
The following week sees the $150,000 Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) for fillies & mares and Bird Of Fire outclassed a more than handy field in 2009.The $100,000 Group 3 DC Mckay Stakes (1100m) open handicap is also held on the same day and is a good class sprint race that was taken out by I Am Invincible in exciting fashion last year.
Goodwood Day
Morphettville racecourse – Sunday 2nd May 2010
The final day of the carnival sees the running of the feature autumn sprint in Adelaide, which is the $300,000 Group 1 Goodwood (1200m), that always attracts a good quality field. The race is a set weight & penalty affair and won in 2009 by the champion galloper Takeover Target.Also held on Goodwood Day is the $300,000 Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) for three-year-old gallopers and 2008 Victoria Derby winner Rebel Raider scored a very easy win in the race last year.
Rounding out the final day is the $200,000 Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) under set weight & penalty conditions and taken out in 2009 by Serious Speed, and the $100,000 Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) for three-year-old fillies raced at set weight & penalties and Princess Pulse saluted last year.
