Emirates Stakes Day Feature Races

In a change of spring programming the VRC and Racing Victoria renamed the Mackinnon Stakes (formerly held on Derby Day) to the Emirate Stakes and moved it to the final day of the carnival. The race formerly run as the Emirates Stakes is now the Longine Mile (1600m) and run on Derby Day on the first day of the carnival.

The final day of the Flemington carnival takes place two days after Crown Oaks day and is known as ‘Family Day’, where spectacular thoroughbred racing combines with many family orientated festivities and activities on the day.

Five group races take place on Emirates Stakes Day including the $1,000,000 Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic feature sprint race down the straight course, while other feature races are the Group  2 Matriarch Stakes, Group 2 Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate.

Racing at Flemington is conducted by the Victoria Turf Club (VRC) and the Emirates Stakes signals the end of the four-day Flemington spring racing carnival.

Other important spring races prior to Melbourne Cup week include the $2.5Million Caulfield Cup at Caulfield and the $3Million WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

Both races  take place on consecutive Saturdays prior to the AAMI Victoria Derby on the first day of the Flemington four-day carnival.

Emirates Stakes History

The Emirates Stakes was originally known as the Cantala Stakes in 1919 and has grown to become the biggest mile race of the year in Victoria.

A major prizemoney increase in 2005 along with a change of race conditions to a quality handicap has seen the race grow in stature to become one of the most important 1600 metre races in the country each year.

Quality gallopers Vain (1969), Taj Rossi (1973), Better Loosen Up (1989), Shaftesbury Avenue (1990) and Testa Rossa (2000) have all won this event over the years.
