Crown Oaks

The Crown Oaks is the premier staying event for three-year-old fillies during the exciting four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington in November.

Crown Oaks Day is known as ‘Ladies Day’ and is held midweek on a Thursday, two days after the Melbourne Cup.

The 2016 Crown Oaks will run on Thursday 3rd November 2016 at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne.

The Crown Oaks is the female equivalent of the AAMI Victoria Derby, held on the first day of the four-day Flemington carnival, and is run over the same 2500 metres distance at level weights, except the Crown Oaks is a race for fillies only.

Crown Oaks Day Feature Races

The country’s best staying fillies generally contest the Crown Oaks, aiming to score black type Group 1 glory to enhance prospective breeding careers.

The Group 2 Wakeful Stakes over 2000 metres on Derby Day has traditionally proven the best guide to this race over the years.

The Victoria Turf Club (VRC) administers racing at Flemington race track and the Crown Oaks is one of the highlights of the fabulous Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, along with the Emirates Stakes two days later, on the final day of the Flemington carnival.

Other prestigious races held before the Flemington carnival are the $2.5Million Caulfield Cup at Caulfield and the $3Million WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, which both take place the previous two Saturdays in October.

Crown Oaks History

The Crown Oaks is the oldest fillies classic in Australia and dates way back to 1859.

The race distance changed from 12 furlongs to 2400m when the metrics system was introduced in the early seventies and one year later the race would become 2500 metres to provide a longer run out of the straight before the first turn.

Briesis (1876) is one of the most memorable Oaks winners as she was good enough to gain victory in both the Victoria Derby and the Melbourne Cup. Quality female gallopers Light Fingers (1964), Surround (1976), Rose Of Kingston (1981), Special Harmony (2003), Miss Finland (2006) and Mosheen (2011)  have all been Oaks winners.
