Our best staying fillies generally contest the Crown Oaks, aiming for Blue Riband Group 1 glory, and the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes over 2000 metres on Derby Day has traditionally proven the best guide to this race. Both Faint Perfume (2009) and Brazilian Pulse (2010) both won the Wakeful Stakes & Crown Oaks double to prove the premier staying fillies of that spring.

The Victoria Turf Club (VRC) administers racing at Flemington race track and the Crown Oaks is one of the highlights of the fabulous Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, along with the Emirates Stakes to come on the final day of the Flemington carnival.

Crown Oaks History

The Crown Oaks is the oldest fillies classic in Australia and dates way back to 1859.

The race distance changed from 12 furlongs to 2400m when the metrics system was introduced in the early seventies and one year later the race would become 2500 metres to provide a longer run out of the straight before the first turn.

Briesis (1876) is one of the most memorable Oaks winners as she was good enough to gain victory in both the Victoria Derby and the Melbourne Cup. Quality female gallopers Light Fingers (1964), Surround (1976), Rose Of Kingston (1981), Special Harmony (2003) and Miss Finland (2006) have all been Oaks winners.
