Caulfield Cup

The Caulfield Cup is Australia’s most prestigious 2400 metre handicap race and the second biggest Cup race of the spring behind the Melbourne Cup.

Caulfield racecourse hosts the $2.5Million Caulfield Cup in mid October, one week before the WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and two weeks before the famed Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington.

The Caulfield Cup combines with the Melbourne Cup to form the big feature Cup’s double of the spring and punters invest heavily at the huge early odds on offer in an attempt to snare a massive payout.

The 2011 Caulfield Cup was taken out by Leon Macdonald mare Southern Speed, ridden by Craig Williams, who beat Green Moon into second place, with Tullamore finishing third.

Caulfield Cup History

First run in the autumn of 1879, the Caulfield Cup has a proud history and created some of the most memorable moments in Australian racing. The race was moved to the spring in 1881 and has grown to become the second most prestigious race of the Melbourne spring carnival behind the Melbourne Cup.

Saint Warden scored at 100/1 in 1948 to become the longest priced winner of the Caulfield Cup while the mighty Tulloch is the sortest priced winner at 4/6 or around $1.67 in decimal odds.

Capturing the big Caulfield & Melbourne Cup spring Cup’s double has long been on the agenda for trainers and horses during the spring with the achievement guaranteeing them a place in history.

The running of the Caulfield Cup signals big time racing in Melbourne during the spring and its place on the spring calendar is a highlight of the racing year.
