These two teams clashed in the Second qualifying final in Perth where the Eagles reigned supreme, winning 14-12-96 to Hawthorn 9-10-64.

West Coast put plenty of pressure on Hawthorn and had the game won by three-wuarter-time, doing so without Brownlow Medallist Matt Priddis, who returns for the Grand Final.

Prior to that, they met in Round 19, also in Perth, where Hawthorn defeated West Coast by 14 points.

Hawthorn vs West Coast Season Averages

Team Goals Points Disposals Disp PG
Hawthorn 16.4 10.1 11.4 10.2 393 359 24.0 35.5
West Coast 15.2 10.2 13.4 9.2 371 353 24.5 34.6

Both sides match up very evenly on average stats for and against which makes the home ground advantage significant for Hawthorn to get an edge. The Hawks are slightly more offensive, but the Eagles have a higher disposal per goal rate at less average disposals, which suggests they can be more damaging if they get more of the ball..

If both sides score to their average figures for and against then Hawthorn will score around 90 and West Coast 88.

Hawthorn vs West Coast Head to Head

Year Rd Home Pts Away Pts Venue
2015 QF West Coast 96 Hawthorn 64 Domain (Per)
2015 R19 West Coast 74 Hawthorn 88 Domain (Per)
2014 R12 Hawthorn 123 West Coast 79 Aurora (Tas)
2013 R13 Hawthorn 123 West Coast 103 Etihad (Mel)
2013 R2 West Coast 98 Hawthorn 148 Patersons (Per)
2012 R23 Hawthorn 95 West Coast 70 MCG (Mel)

In a bad sign for the travelling Eagles the Hawks have won 5 of the past 6 clashes, including the last meeting at the MCG back in 2012.

Hawthorn were too strong for West Coast in Round 12 at Aurora Stadium in Tasmania, and at home on the MCG they will fancy themselves to get the job done once again.

Our Tip: Hawthorn

On form, facts & figures alone there is not much between these two sides and the only difference may be the game being played at the MCG, which decidedly favours the Hawks.

While there is no denying that the West Coast has the ability to shut down the Hawthorn game and put them under pressure, doing it on the biggest stage of all against the reigning premier is going to be a huge ask for such an inexperienced final’s side.

We think the Eagles are value if you Pick Your Own Line at Centrebet, but the Hawks are clearly the ones to beat on the MCG.
