The 2010-2011 A-League season kicks off at 7:30pm on Thursday night with new A-League side Melbourne Heart fronting up to the Central Coast Mariners at AAMI Park in Melbourne.
Melbourne Heart vs Central Coast Mariners
In the season opener Simon Colosimo will lead the Melbourne Heart in their first A-League match against the Mariners and coach John van’t Schip has some more than handy players at his disposal.
Clint Bolton, Gerald Sibon, Michael Beauchamp and Matt Thompson are all set to line-up against Central Coast along with Colosimo while John Aloisi will miss with a hamstring injury and Kristian Sarkies is also absent due to a leg problem.
The Central Coast Mariners side enter the unknown facing Heart for the first time and Graham Arnold will facing a vocal Melbourne crowd in his first outing as Mariner’s coach. The Mariners will be relying on Alex Wilkinson, Daniel McBreen and Patricio Perez to get them over the line and this has the makings of an exciting clash with a draw very much on the cards.
Adelaide United vs Perth Glory
In other games Adelaide United will be looking to have a much better season this year when they host the Newcastle Jets at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday night. Robert Cornthwaite and Travis Dodd will both miss for Adelaide with injury problems while the Jets will be without Neil Young and Zhang Shou. Another game that has all the makings of a draw but the Jets on the line are well worth a shot.
Perth Glory look likely types for this season with the arrival of Robbie Fowler from their first round opponents and they will be at home to North Queensland Fury on Friday night. The Glory will be without Andy Todd, Victor Sikora and Tommy Amphlett for another couple of weeks because of injury. The Fury are in for a long season especially after losing Robbie Fowler and Robbie Middleby in the off season and this game should end up in a victory to the home side.
Sydney FC vs Melbourne Victory
The Grand Final rematch should be a cracker on Saturday when Sydney FC play host to Melbourne Victory in one of the most anticipated games of the round. Sydney have lost plenty of experience in Simon Colosimo, Steve Corica, John Aloisi and Clint Bolton who all departed the club over summer but the have picked up a couple of ready made replacements in gun midfielder Nick Carle and goalkeeper Liam Reddy.
Melbourne Victory is a class outfit set to be a major force again but they will tackle Sydney without key striker Archie Thompson who has a knee injury and Matthew Kemp will also miss with a knee concern. One would fancy the home side here in a game that could attract a few goals.
Gold Coast United vs Brisbane Roar
The last game of the round features the Gold Coast United and Brisbane Roar in an all Queensland match that will show exactly where both sides are at and a draw appears very likely unless you have a crack at the Roar on the line.
The Gold Coast will be looking to New Zealand marksman Shane Smeltz to find plenty of goals during the season and for the season opener Matt Osman will miss with a knee problem.
Brisbane Roar are likely improvers with plenty of new faces and they are still awaiting international clearance for Jean Carlo Solorzano while Reinaldo and Rocky Visconte will miss a couple of weeks with hamstring injuries.
