2010 British Open Golf preview – St Andrews July 15th-18th

The 2010 British Open is the third golf major of the year and the 139th Open Championship will be held from Thursday 15th July through to Sunday 18th July marking the 150th anniversary of event.

Taking place at the Old Course at St Andrews in Fife, Scotland it will be the 28th time the Open will be played at St Andrews and interestingly enough, Tiger Woods won the event the last two times the Open was played at St Andrews, in 2000 and 2005.

The World’s best golfers will descend on St Andrews on Thursday to contest the famous Claret Jug and bookmakers as usual have installed Tiger Woods favourite $6.50 to lift the title from Rory McIlroy $18.00 and Lee Westwood $19.00.

Stewart Cink defeated Tom Watson in the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry Resort in Ayrshire, Scotland after a four-hole playoff was required to decide the winner. Lee Westwood finished one shot back in third place.

2010 British Open Preview – Major Chances

Lee Westwood ($19.00)
English players have links experience and Westwood is number three in the world and he was only one shot off winning this event last year. In good form and has finished in the top 25 in his last five golfing majors so could be worth a shot at the Top 25 @ $1.72.

Padraig Harrington ($21.00)
Harrington has won this event twice previously in 2007 & 2008 and his ability around links courses puts him right in the mix. His improved form of late which has produced four top 10 finishes this season put him right in this event and he could be worth a crack at a Top 10 finish @ $3.00.

Tiger Woods ($6.50)
Can’t go into a golfing major without considering Tiger Woods although his well documented problems has reduced his golf game to that of a mere mortal. He has been well down on form but has still collected two top 10 finishes in both majors this year. With multiple wins at this layout including the last two plaed, Woods has to be considered although he is very poor value if you plan to back the world number one.

A Top 10 finish @ $1.55 is the only bet we would consider but even that price is way unders and best avoided.

Justin Rose ($26.00)
In-form golfer and another Englishman who is very well suited here with his game and especially the way he’s been playing of late with multiple PGA Tour wins. Has finished top 10 here three times since 1998 and at the Each Way Top 6 @ $26.00 he could give a big site.

Ernie Els ($19.00)
The Big Easy has had a much improved year in 2010 and his last four years at the British Open has produced an 8th, 7th, 3rd & 4th place finish which suggests he is going to be one of the prime movers here and in with a very good showing, especially for the Top 10 @ $2.70 to finish in the first ten placings.

Phil Mickelson ($19.00)
Mickelson always performs at the big Majors but his record at the British Open is not particularly good for a player of his ability, however he is one of those golfers you can never ignore as his class takes him a long way. Maybe the best option for Mickleson is a shot at the Top 25 @ 1.72.

Steve Stricker
Currently one of the hottest golfers on the tour and he finished top 10 at the 2007 & 2008 Open Championships which give him very good claims. Also ranked number four in the world to show his ability and he could be well worth an an investment to finish in the Top 10 @ $4.50 for an interest.

2010 British Open roughies

Justin Leonard ($151.00)
Regularly performs well at this event and Top 25 @ $5.50 could provide a run for your money.
