Germany and Spain through to Semi Finals of World Cup

Germany and Spain will clash in the second Semi-Final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after they disposed of both Argentina and Paraguay in Quarter Final knockout games played on Sunday.

Germany were set alight by Thomas Muller within the first three minutes at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town when he put the Germans in front from a Schweinsteiger free kick.

The German goal would set the tone for the rest of the match and Argentina were never really in the hunt.

Germany always looked the more dangerous of the two sides and they went to half time with a one goal lead over the South Americans.

Argentina fans were left stunned at the 68th minute when Miroslav Klose scored his thirteenth World Cup goal for Germany to give them a two goal cushion and a firm grip on proceedings.

Schweinsteiger then cut a path through the Argentina defence with 15 minutes to go and set up a third goal for Arne Friedrich to put the the game beyond doubt for the Europeans.

A second Klose goal with one minute remaining added insult to injury for Argentina and it would be Germany’s day in the sun and a Semi-Final berth for reward.

Germany now tackle Spain in the second World Cup Semi-Final on Thursday 8th July and they will do so without the classy Thomas Mueller who will miss the match after he received another yellow card during the match.

It took Spain 83 minutes to finally discover a way through Paraguay’s defence in their 1-0 Quarter Final win at 2010 World Cup and once again it came at the hands of striker David Villa.

Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg would witness no goals in the first half before two missed penalties in the second half would change the course of the game and see Spain through to the semi finals.

Paraguay’s Oscar Cardozo was fouled in the area just on the hour by Spain’s Gerard Pique and his resultant penalty kick was saved by the Spain keeper Iker Casillas.

Moments later Spain were awarded a penalty when David Villa was fouled by Antolin Alcaraz and Xabi Alonso managed to slot the penalty home before the referee disallowed the goal and made him take it again after team mates ran into the box when he took the kick.

Alonso was unable to repeat his first effort and Justo Villar parried the ball away to deny Spain a goal.

With the game heading to extra time David Villa would come to Spain’s aid and score what would be the match winning goal for Spain at the 83rd minute and earn them a Semi-Final meeting with Germany.
