The final day of the Brisbane Winter Carnival takes place this weekend when Eagle Farm Racecourse will play host to Winter Stakes Day on Saturday, 26th June, in Brisbane, where a great day of racing is on the program.
The feature race of the day is the Group 1 Winter Stakes, which is a Fillies and Mares weight for age race run over a distance of 1400 metres.
Offering prizemoney of $500,000 for entrants, the Winter Stakes was taken out last year by Russeting who gained victory by 3/4 length from Prima Nova in second place with Subtle Cove one length away third in a time of 1:22.64.
Featured group races for Winter Stakes Day
- Group 1 – Winter Stakes – 1400 metres – F&M, Weight for Age
- Group 3 – Tattersall’s Cup – 2200 metres – Open Handicap
- Group 3 – W J Healy Stakes – 1200 metres – Quality Handicap
The Winter Stakes is one of the most prestigious Group One races on the racing calendar for mares and has attracted a quality field.
Gerald Ryan mare Melito $3.00 has opened up as favourite for the Winter Stakes and jockey Corey Brown will have to negotiate a tricky barrier 13 with the talented mare.
Melito has superb form for this race after finishing third in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 prior to her last start second in the $1Million Stradbroke handicap over this journey.
Consistent mare Beaded $4.50 from the Peter Snowden stable with Larry Cassidy aboard has drawn ideally in barrier 2 and will be very hard to toss judging on her close-up fourth in the Stradbroke Handicap last time out.
Dane Ripper Stakes winner Set For Fame $5.00 is a classy filly from the Peter Moody stable and she has drawn a lovely gate (4) and has the services of Blake Shinn in her attempt at Group 1 success.
Brent Gillovic trained mare Wealth Princess $6.00 has proven to be well above average and is set to run well although she will have to contend with a wide gate, as will reliable galloper Gold Water $6.50 who is dropping back in distance from her Doomben Cup second last start.
