2010 Stradbroke Handicap Preview – Stradbroke Field & Odds

The $1,000,000 Stradbroke Handicap will highlight a wonderful eight race program at Eagle Farm racecourse on Saturday 12th June on Brisbane’s biggest race day of the winter.

A top field has been assembled for the Stradbroke and it doesn’t seem that long ago that Tye Angland guided Black Piranha to victory in the 2009 Stradbroke Handicap finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of Danleigh with a half length away to Ortensia in third spot in a time of 1:25.53.

Favourite for the race is the Mark Kavanagh trained Whobegotyou $3.00 who will be ridden by Michael Rodd and jump from barrier nine.

Whobegotyou resumed with a fast finishing second in the Doomben 10,000 a fortnight ago and he will be primed for this event and is set to run a big race.

Classy Gerald Ryan filly Melito $6.00 has drawn perfectly in barrier 4 and Corey Brown should be able to give the Doomben 10,000 third placegetter the run of the race and she has a great chance to add another Group 1 race to her resume.

Bart Cummings will be hoping his up and coming 3yo colt Latin News $8.00 gets a run as from barrier 7 and with only 50 kilograms he will be one to watch with Craig Newitt aboard.

Mark Kavanagh has a more than handy second stringer in Catapulted $10.00 who has not drawn particularly well in 13. He is in super form and Luke Nolen will have to use all his skill to get the Catbird gelding into a handy position without using too much petrol.

Glen Boss will ride talented filly Graceful Anna $11.00 who has drawn ideally in barrier 2 and trainer David Pfieffer will fancy his chances with the Canny Lad filly who will carry just 49.5 kilograms.

Ortensia $13.00 from the Tony Noonan is fairly good odds for such a top mare but she has the very wide 21 gate to negotiate and that is going to make task very difficult from such a poor draw. Craig Williams will need plenty of luck from out there but there is no doubting her ability.

Last year’s winner Black Piranha $14.00 ran fourth in the Doomben 10,000 last time out and has some chance here but he has a poor gate in 15 and will need to find a bit to win for the second year running.

Beaded $17.00 is a very consistent mare used to carrying big weights and with only 51 kilograms she won’t know herself, but she will have to come from barrier 22 which is a big ask.

Other feature races on Stradbroke day include the Group 1 Queensland Derby, Group 1 The TJ Smith and the Group 2 Brisbane Cup.
