Sam Stosur $75 into $2.36 to win French Open at Betfair

Australia’s Samantha Stosur is now into outright favouritism at Betfair to win the French Open after beating world number one Serena Williams in the quarter-finals in Paris overnight.

Punters on Betfair have made Stosur the $2.36 favourite to claim her maiden grand slam title which would also be Australia’s first at Roland Garros since Margaret Court captured the women’s singles in 1973.

Stosur has defeated four-times winner Justine Henin, and the 2002 champion Williams in consecutive matches to progress to the semi-finals, and the associated betting trend on Betfair reinforces the extraordinary progress of the Australian.

Stosur blew out to odds of $75 to win the tournament when she trailed Henin by a set their round of 16 match, only to shorten to $8.60 upon beating the Belgian in three.

And again Stosur defied the punters against Serena overnight. She blew to odds of $20 in Betfair’s tournament winner market upon dropping a set to Williams, but now heads betting as she prepares to face Jelena Jankovic in the quarters.

Betfair’s Mathew Thompson said: “We already know this is a monumental effort by Sam, but it is put into greater context when you consider she’s been written off by punters around the world in her last two matches.

“However, there were some loyal Stosur supporters that took the tournament winners odds of $75 against Henin and the $20 against Serena and they’ve been rewarded handsomely.”

Stosur is currently the $1.74 favourite to defeat Jankovic at $2.10 in their semi-final while Francesca Schiavone is the $1.94 popular elect to defeat Elena Dementieva at $2.04 in the other semi.
