2010 French Open Preview – French Open Tips and Betting Odds

The 2010 French Open of tennis starts on Sunday 23rd May at Roland Garros Stadium in France and Spaniard Rafael Nadal is a short priced favourite to claim his fifth title in 6 years.

Roger Federer finally claimed the one title that had eluded him when he defeated Robin Soderling 6-1 7-6 6-4 in straight sets in the 2009 French Open.

Federer was aided by the fact that Soderling had put out his French Open nemesis Rafeal Nadal earlier in the tournament.

2010 French Open Preview – Mens

Sportsbet has Rafael Nadal (Spain – Seeded 2) an overwhelming favourite at $1.40 to take out the title and the Spaniard has recent wins in Rome and Monte Carlo under the belt, to have him in great shape going into another French Open.

Roger Federer (Switzerland 1) is $4.50 to win the title but it is hard to seeing the Swiss maestro beating Nadal if they both make the final. Federer has been unable to get close to the Spaniard at Roland Garros in previous tournaments, and as good as Federer is, Raffa simply has his measure on clay.

Federer is expected to at least make the semi-finals as he has been doing on the grand slam circuit for quite some time.

Novak Djokovic (Serbia 3) is next best at $19.00 with David Ferrer (Spain 9) at $23.00.

Last year’s runner-up Robin Soderling (Sweden 5) is currently $67.00, while Andy Murray (Britain 4) is quoted at $31.00.

2010 French Open Preview – Women

The $3.20 favourite for the women’s title is Justine Henin (Belgium 22) who won the French Open four times in five years, prior to giving the game away for an extended period.

Henin’s effort in the Australian Open Final earlier in the year, when she lost in a hard fought three sets to Serena Williams, shows she is back to somewhere near her best.

Justine Henin will be very hard to beat on the clay at Roland Garros.

Serena Williams (USA 1) is currently $4.50 and she excels on the Grand Slam stage. Williams won this event in 2002 and while she is much better suited on grass or hard courts, her all round Slam ability give her a top chance.

Other players in betting are Jelena Jankovic (Serbia 4) at  $6.00, Venus Williams (USA 2) $10.00 and Elena Dementieva (Russia 5) $15.00.

Last year’s Russian finalists are at big odds, with Svetlana Kuznetsova (Russia 6) at $21.00 and Dinara Safina (Russia 9) at $26.00.

Australian Samantha Stosur AUS (7) goes into the French Open on the back of some good form and she is currently $19.00 at Sportsbet. Stosur should be able to get to the second week but history says she won’t have the mental toughness to go all the way, but hopefully she can prove us wrong.

The grunter Maria Sharapova (Russia 12) is at $51.00.

2010 French Open recent winners – Women

2009 Svetlana Kuznetsova vs Dinara Safina 6-4 6-2
2008 Ana Ivanovic vs Dinara Safina 6-4 6-3
2007 Justine Henin vs Ana Ivanovic 6-1 6-2
2006 Justine Henin-Hardenne vs Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 6-4
2005 Justine Henin-Hardenne vs Mary Pierce 6-1, 6-1

2010 French Open Women’s betting odds

The 2010 French Open will be a hotly contested affair and Sportsbet has plenty of betting markets on the Roland Garros event.

We think Rafael Nadal is almost a good thing for the men’s title and Justine Henin also has a big chance to notch another title win. Currently at Sportsbet the Nadal & Henin double is $4.48 and well worth a crack if you would like an interest for the tournament.
