Prime Defender wins Duke Of York Stakes at York

Prime Defender $21.00 from the Barry Hills yard won the Duke Of York Stakes at York racecourse overnight when he held on to defeat favourite Showcasing $4 by by half a length, with a head away to Main Aim $6 in third spot.

Former Australian galloper Starspangledbanner was in the race until the final 100 metres and failed to run a place.

This is the first group win for Prime Defender and he backed up from his win four days earlier at Haydock in a Class 2 event.

Three-year-old Showcasing did a great job against the older horses from a wide draw and he rallied hard in the final stages, while Main Aim finished the race off pretty well and will be better for the run.

Both Showcasing and Main Aim are likely to head to the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot.

2010 Duke of York Final Result

1. 21.00 Prime Defender
2. 5.00 Showcasing
3. 6.00 Main Aim
4. 15.00 Doncaster Rover
