Hollindale Stakes Preview & Gold Coast Guineas Preview

The picturesque Gold Coast racecourse will attract a big crowd to their annual Prime Minister’s Cup meeting on Saturday 8th May, with six Stakes races on the program, headlined by the Group 2 $300,000 Hollindale Stakes at weight-for-age.

Some quality horseflesh has won the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes and gallopers of the ilk of Scenic Shot, Shogun Lodge, Rough Habit, and Melbourne Cup & Caulfield Cup winner Might and Power have all been successful in the race.

The Chris Jordan trained Fulmonti won last year’s Hollindale Stakes when he scored by a neck from Izonit with Sir Slick three-quarters of a length away in thid place.

Also on the card is the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas for three year olds, which has seen many good types kick start their career, including Eremein, Fashions Afield and Gold Edition.

The 2009 Gold Coast Guineas winner was Chakvetadze from the Michael Nolan camp who defeated Leapfrog in a close finish with Desuetude one length away in third spot.

The Anthony Cumming’s trained Road To Rock fresh off his Group 1 AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes win will be very hard to hold out here from barrier 3 as he will get a lovely run in transit. Last year’s AJC Derby winner Metal Bender is not far away from his best and is classy enough to make a race of this.

Others worth mentioning are last year’s winner Fulmonti, who is not without hope to make it two in a row, and the in-form Rothera can run well again, along with tough mare Gold Water. Rockdale is running into form and could bob up at odds.

Paprika from the Birchley stable can go close in the Guineas after her top fresh run when 4th on a heavy track at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago. She is a very talented filly who will be improved by the run. Deer Valley was responsible for a big run in the Hinkler when 2nd to Border Rebel and that’s pretty solid form for a race like this. Stryker rarely wins but he always runs an honest race and he has been tackling better fields in Sydney and will find this easier.

Other chances are Temple of Boom who used the rail to win when resuming from a spell and be fitter here. Tierqualo, Spot On Target and Sarge In Charge all look good enough to surprise.
