WS Cox Plate History
The WS Cox Plate honours Moonee Valley founder William Samuel Cox and was first run in 1922 offering just 1000 pounds in prizemoney for entrants.
A 7yo imported galloper named Violencello won the first ever WS Cox Plate and since that day the race has become one of the most important and prestigious on the racing calender, being worth $3,000,000 in prizemoney.
The WS Cox Plate has produced many wonderful memories and who can forget the day Bill Collins cried out ‘Kingston Town can’t win’ before the champion galloper went on to win one of his record three Cox Plates in a row from 1980-82.
From the ill fated Dulcify sending shivers down the back with his scintillating 1979 win to the epic Bonecrusher and Our Waverley Star duel in 1986, Ws Cox Plate will always be known as the ‘race where legends are made’.
