AAMI Victoria Derby History
First run in 1855, the Victoria Derby is one of the oldest classic races in this country and oddly enough, fillies won the first three editions of the race. In recent times the race has been dominated by males with Frances Tressady the last filly to win the event way back in 1923.
The Derby has been kind to maiden gallopers on the odd occasion with Martini Henry (1883), Fire Oak (1990) and Redding (1992) all going into the Derby as maidens before tasting unlikely success.
Clare Lindop became the first female jockey to win a Victoria Derby as a jockey when she rode Rebel Raider to victory in 2008 beating the hotpot Whobegotyou into second place while in 1995, highly successful trainer Gai Waterhouse became the first woman to train a Derby winner when star galloper Nothin’ Leica Dane was victorious.
